Dr. Nicola Gates
Registered Psychologist - Perinatal & Women’s Mental Health
Dr Nicola Gates is a registered psychologist with over thirty years of experience working with adults. She combines psychological therapies, assessment, diagnosis and psychoeducation within a warm, strengths-based approach.
Nicola has a special interest in women’s mental health, supporting women through the many transitions of life, including pregnancy, the postpartum period, motherhood, perimenopause and menopause. She brings a deep understanding of how hormonal changes can influence mental health and emotional wellbeing, alongside the identity, relationship and everyday challenges that can accompany these stages.
Within the perinatal period, Nicola also supports mothers and their infants to build attuned, secure connections. She believes it takes a village to raise a child and values working collaboratively within each family’s support network.
Her research has explored menopause, exercise and psychological wellbeing. She has authored over thirty academic publications and two books, A Brain for Life and The Feel Good Guide to Menopause, published by HarperCollins.
I am also a baby massage instructor. I am passionate about supporting not only parents' mental health, but also the precious relationship between parent and baby. Additionally to my therapy, I offer evidence-based baby massage education, teaching parents gentle techniques that promote connection, confidence and responsive caregiving during the early months of life.
Baby massage is much more than relaxation. Research suggests it can:
Strengthen parent–infant attachment and bonding.
Support your baby's developing nervous system and emotional regulation.
Encourage relaxation and may help improve sleep.
Assist with common discomforts such as wind and constipation.
Increase parents' confidence in understanding and responding to their baby's cues.
Create intentional moments of calm and connection during what can often be a busy and overwhelming season of life.
